Introducing Loopholes, a high-end mountain bike wheelset built from Fusion Fiber™, an advanced polymer solution with ride qualities that easily surpass traditional carbon fiber rims. We call them Loopholes because we get around a few problems which have not been addressed by current wheels. Carbon wheels are strong but they can also be harsh, and wheels are the last place riders want the control-killing rigidity found in many composite rims. Evil’s Loopholes wheels find a way around the harshness, carving a hallowed middle ground in the world of wheels. It’s a happy medium for every size of bike and every style of riding.

The Devil is

in the Details

Feature

01

Superior Impact Resistance

Loopholes feature a 20% improvement in impact resistance over comparable carbon fiber rims. What does it mean for riders? More confidence. These wheels stand up to the abuse mountain biking is known for.

Feature

02

A Quieter Bike

Loopholes are noticeably quieter than traditional carbon wheels due to our unique noise-eating material. The quieter ride is attributed to the rim material working in the background to make your ride not only more stealth, but smoother and more controlled.

Feature

03

Stiff Yet Compliant

But what does it mean? Vertical stiffness is important for strength and control. Too much vertical stiffness can reduce ride quality. “Compliant” is a bike industry engineering nerd term which measures how much the material is allowed to deflect. Loopholes offer a perfect balance of stiffness and compliance which allows the wheels to absorb more of the vertical and side-to-side shock that happens as you hold the straight line through rocky, challenging sections. Long story short: they make for easier, radder riding.

Feature

04

Deadend Vibration

Loopholes absorb bumps in the road with a mind blowing 50% improvement in vibration damping. This lets less trail travel up into your hands and feet. That means longer days and less effort to enjoy all your favorite single track.

Feature

05

Strong Spokes

Reinforced spoke bosses boast greater than 950lb pull through force. That’s a full 15% improvement over non-reinforced spoke faces.

Feature

06

Removable Decals

Don’t want to rep Evil on your ride? Prefer the clean look? Loopholes feature removable decals so you can let those sweet, sweet black wheels shine. Want to fly the Evil freak flag? We have a rainbow of decal color options available through our website or your local Evil dealer.

Feature

07

What's At The Hub

Nothing but the best sits at the center of Evil’s wheels: Industry Nine Hydra Hubs – 6-Bolt Options available in Boost and Super Boost and Center Lock available in Super Boost, all available with Sram and Shimano freehub options.

Feature

08

Powder Coated

Loopholes’ rims are powder coated so they stay beautiful, despite the bruises and bumps the trail tries to put on them.

Feature

09

Metal Where It Matters

The little details matter, like robust high-quality 6061-T6 aluminum valve stems and valve core tool integrated into the alloy valve cap.

Feature

10

Strong Patterns

The 3X rear lacing and 2X front lacing adds up to the perfect balance, with a more compliant front wheel to absorb the hits and a strong rear wheel for the occasional case. Hey, it happens to the best of us.

WHAT IS THE WEIGHT OF THE LOOPHOLE 29” RIM?

489g (Rim only)

WHAT IS THE ERD OF THE LOOPHOLE 29” RIM?

592mm

WHAT LENGTH, DIAMETER AND TYPE OF SPOKE ARE USED IN LOOPHOLE WHEELS?

We use Sapim D-Light Double Butted 2.0 – 1.65 – 2.0 spokes on all Evil Loophole wheels. In a pinch, you can use any brand spoke as long as the diameter (2.0/14 gauge) and length are correct. Spoke lengths are listed below:

  • 29” Front Boost 6-Bolt (2-cross lace pattern) Non-Drive side – 276mm Drive side – 282mm
  • 29” Front Boost Center Lock (2-cross lace pattern) Non-Drive side – 280mm Drive side – 284mm
  • 29” Rear Boost 6-Bolt (3-cross lace pattern) Non-Drive side – 288mm Drive side – 286mm
  • 29” Rear Super Boost 6-Bolt (3-cross lace pattern) Non-Drive side – 288mm Drive side – 286mm
  • 29” Rear Super Boost Center Lock (3-cross lace pattern) Non-Drive side – 290mm Drive side – 286mm
WHAT IS THE MAX SPOKE TENSION FOR THE LOOPHOLE WHEELS?

130kgf

WHAT WIDTH RIM TAPE SHOULD I USE WITH LOOPHOLE WHEELS?

34-36mm width rim tape will work with Loophole wheels.

DO I NEED TO USE MORE THAN ONE LAYER OF RIM TAPE?

No. One layer of rim tape with 4 inches of overlap will perform just as good as wrapping the rim with two layers. Additionally, the rim is designed to interface with the tire using one layer of rim tape. Adding a second layer of tape effectively increased the rim diameter which can make tire install/removal a bit difficult.

WHAT BRAND OF RIM TAPE IS COMPATIBLE WITH LOOPHOLE WHEELS?

Any major brand of rim tape will work – Stans, WTB, Race Face, Enve, Gorilla Tape etc. Of course, you can source rim tape from Evil as well.

WHAT TYPE OF SPOKE NIPPLE IS USED IN LOOPHOLE WHEELS?

We use Sapim Double Square Secure Lock Brass Spoke Nipples – size 2.0 (14 gauge) diameter and 16mm long.

WHY DOESN’T EVIL USE ALLOY SPOKE NIPPLES?
  • Alloy spoke nipples save roughly 22 grams per wheel which is great, right? Not so fast. Combining Aluminum and Carbon Fiber along with outside elements such as water, creates a phenomenon called Galvanic Corrosion. The aluminum will corrode, and the spoke nipple will fail.
  • Aluminum spoke nipples have measurably less pull through and impact strength compared to brass spoke nipples. We designed the Loophole wheelset for aggressive Mountain Bike riding, so we figured our customers would appreciate the added strength.
  • Evil Loophole Fusion Fiber rims save a considerable amount of weight over comparable carbon fiber and aluminum rims. The net weight per Loophole wheel with brass spoke nipples is usually still lighter than a comparable width carbon fiber or aluminum wheel using aluminum spoke nipples.
DOES THE EVIL LOOPHOLE WHEEL USE SPOKE NIPPLE WASHERS? WHY?
  • Yes, Evil does assemble our wheels with spoke nipple washers. We lace Loophole wheels using the Sapim MG spoke nipple washer.
  • Spoke nipples require a chamfered surface to bed into as the spoke and spoke nipple are brought up to tension. The chamfered surface allows the spoke nipple to properly articulate as the wheel is brought to tension.
  • As the tension increases it can become very hard to turn the spoke nipple. Adding the spoke nipple washer allows the spoke nipple to tighten against a like material vs. Fusion Fiber which makes the wheel build much more stable.
  • The Spoke Nipple Washer also serves to protect the Fusion Fiber rim from any imperfections that might be present on a spoke nipple.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TRADITIONAL CARBON FIBER RIM AND THE EVIL FUSION FIBER?
  • Traditional carbon fiber rims are constructed using brittle and toxic epoxies and resins. Carbon fiber requires cold storage, cutting by hand, manual (hand) layup and shaping, autoclave heating & curing, hand sanding/finishing and paint. Carbon fiber rims are known for being too stiff and prone to cracking from high impact however they have gained favor because of their light weight and nice looks. In the past few years carbon fiber rims have risen in weight to combat the cracking problems, which has essentially made most carbon fiber rims equal to the weight of a comparable aluminum rim.
  • Loophole Fusion Fiber rims use an automated cutting process for cleaner 100% accurate cuts, automated shaping for accurate placement of the material, and rapid curing vs. long times in a hot oven. The Fusion fiber material does not require hand finishing or sanding when the rim is removed from the mold and Fusion Fiber does not require a layer of paint to protect the material from corrosion. Rims constructed with Fusion Fiber absorb impact and radially dissipate shock better than carbon fiber rims due to the long-chain polymers used during the manufacturing process. The Fusion Fiber rim is more environmentally friendly to produce, 100% recyclable, more durable and more comfortable to ride than comparable carbon fiber rims. Unlike carbon fiber, Fusion Fiber does not require extra material to withstand impact, therefore a Fusion Fiber rim is lighter than a comparable carbon fiber or aluminum rim.
DO I HAVE TO USE AN EVIL VALVE ON THE LOOPHOLE WHEELS WHEN RUNNING TUBELESS?

No – Evil designed the loophole rim with standard valve hole diameters, so you can use most any brand of valve if the length is at least 44mm.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO OVERTIGHTEN THE VALVE?

Yes – you do not need to use a tool to tighten the valve. Hand tight is plenty of torque to make the valve airtight with the rim.

ARE LOOPHOLE WHEELS COMPATIBLE WITH ALL TUBELESS TIRES?

Yes, Evil Loophole wheels can be set up with any brand tubeless tire when combined with a 44mm or longer tubeless valve, 34-36mm tubeless rim tape and tire sealant.

CAN I USE A TUBE TYPE TIRE WITH EVIL LOOPHOLE WHEELS?

Yes, you can use a tube type tire with Loophole wheels in combination with a rubber inner-tube. But do not use a Tube Type tire set up tubeless on Evil Loophole wheels. Tube Type tires use a bead designed to be held in place by an innertube. Lack of an inner tube will allow the Tube Type tire to separate from the Evil Loophole rim with very little effort.

WHAT IS THE MAX AIR PRESSURE?

55psi for both Tubeless and Tube Type tires.

WHAT IS THE MINIMUM AIR PRESSURE?
  • Tubeless: Minimum pressure for a Tubeless tire with sealant is 18psi. Using a tubeless tire at a pressure lower than 18psi will likely result in the tire de-beading from the rim during use, causing loss of control and potential rider injury.
  • Tube Type: Minimum pressure for a Tube Type tire with inner tube is 35psi. Using a Tube Type tire at a pressure lower than 35psi will likely result in the tire de-beading from the rim, causing loss of control and potential rider injury.
